March 18, 2016 |
The eyes of the casino industry focused on the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe this week as leaders unveiled the $1 billion project and introduced a team that includes executives from some of the largest casino developers, operators, and architectural firms in the world.
On Monday, March 14, Cedric Cromwell, Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Council Chairman, and City of Taunton Mayor Thomas C. Hoye Jr. unveiled site plans and artistic renderings of the 15-story, three-tower First Light Resort & Casino and announced that the first phase of the project would open by next summer.
"To all the doubters out there, sorry," tribal council chairman Cedric Cromwell said. "Guess what? This is happening now, in the city of Taunton."
Reporters from media outlets, including The Boston Globe, as well as television camera crews from Eyewitness News among others, stood shoulder to shoulder inside Taunton Town Hall along with tribal members, Taunton residents, and casino executives as Mr. Cromwell and Mayor Hoye spoke of the thousands of jobs and mitigation work that will stem from the casino.
"We are going to show you something so amazing, you will be in awe," he told the audience before drapes were removed from 12 large-framed photographs of the resort.
Paul Steelman, chief executive officer of Las Vegas-based Steelman Partners, led the audience through a video of renderings of the interior and exterior of the buildings after he and Mr. Cromwell unveiled new artist renderings of the casino. The video revealed gold-tinted statues, indoor pools, gaming rooms, hotel rooms, and other aspects of the proposed destination resort.
